Cindy McCain stated during an interview on Sunday that her late husband, former Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) would be distraught over the current divisive and unrecognizable state of politics in America.

“Certainly the incivility that’s been happening,” McCain replied to ABC’s Jonathan Karl when asked what current issues would be driving the late senator. “John was always the guy fighting for the little guy and I think John would be very discouraged about the border situation right now.”

“He would also be the voice of reason in all of this, which is what we’re sorely lacking right now – is his voice of reason and his understanding of the purpose and the ability to be able to work across the aisle on these issues,” she continued. “That’s how we worked for so many years. And now to just close ranks and not talk to anybody, it doesn’t make any sense. It not only doesn’t make any sense, it doesn’t do any good for the country.”

McCain stated that since her husband’s passing a year ago, there have not been any lawmakers willing to fill the void he left and work to reach across the aisle with political adversaries in order to get things done. However, she’s hopeful someone will still step up.

Regardless, she contended that the Republican Party under President Donald Trump has strayed from the values it once promulgated and is no longer representative of what it looked like even mere decades ago.

“This party is not the party of Abraham Lincoln – that I’ve seen anyway – nor the party of Ronald Reagan,” McCain said. “We’re the ones who should be non-partisan and we’re the ones that should be working for the good of all.”

“I believe this pendulum is going to swing back,” she continued. “I don’t know when, but I just don’t believe that we’re going to stick right here on the side that’s just disruptive, and mean, and non-progressive in anyway.”

The Arizona senator, who died from brain cancer last August, was a vocal critic of Trump, and the two often butted heads publicly.

“Our country is not well right now. We need to get our act together, number one, and step back and take a breath,” McCain said, before swiftly pivoting to the topic of immigration. “This county’s made up of immigrants. We’re made up of people of every color, every creed. And that’s what makes us special. And to somehow side-up black and white, or brown and white, or whatever it may be, is just wrong. It’s not who we are.”

Interestingly, John McCain’s closest colleague, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), has become a staunch ally and steadfast defender of the president. McCain, however, refused to express disappointment in the South Carolina senator, noting that he is still a dear friend.

“Lindsey has his own political career to worry about and his own political life. I would just hope that in the long-run everyone would begin to move in the right direction, including Lindsey or anybody else,” McCain said. “Lindsey’s a part of my family, he’s a good friend, and I cannot or will not be critical of Lindsey.”
