Suffice it to say, there is no tingle going up MSNBC host Chris Matthews’ leg over presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) gaining steam in the 2020 election.
On the day of the vital Iowa caucuses, a visibly troubled Matthews noted that the self-described “socialist” “can’t win” in a general election, adding that he and fellow Democrats have a “real problem” if Sanders is to become the party’s nominee.
“It’s not gonna be good if it’s Bernie,” the MSNBC host said Monday, appearing on a “Morning Joe” panel.
As noted by The Hill, Matthews likened a possible Sanders nomination to that of Democratic nominee George McGovern in 1972, who lost to President Nixon by 49 states.
“What are my thoughts? I’m not happy. I’m not happy with this field,” said Matthews. “I think they (Democrats) got to find a candidate for president that can beat Trump. … Im lookin’, I’m still lookin’.”
“Bernie Sanders is not gonna be president fo the United States,” he declared.
Matthews’ worried remarks come as Sanders positions himself to possibly win Iowa and New Hampshire.
Sanders “leads by 4% over Joe Biden in the RealClearPolitics statewide polling average, as we enter caucus day,” reported Daily Wire Editor-at-Large Josh Hammer, Monday morning. “Sanders is now also the firm and unequivocal favorite for next week’s first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, and all eyes will be attuned tonight to see if he can position himself well to open this primary season by wining the first two states in back-to-back fashion.”
Matthews highlighted Sanders’ past comments on communist and socialist leaders and complained that the senator openly calls himself a “socialist,” instead of referring to himself as a “democratic-socialist” like far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has, the host complained.
Matthews argued that former NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg will battle it out with Sanders for the nomination. Bloomberg, said the far-left host, will have to frame himself as the alternative to Sanders, who will surely lose the general election to President Donald Trump.
Sanders’ policy proposals and past remarks have allowed politicos to credibly label the senator a full-on communist. Writing at The New York Post in 2016, for example, Paul Sperry outlined:
In the early ’70s, Sanders helped found the Liberty Union Party, which called for the nationalization of all US banks and the public takeover of all private utility companies.
After failed runs for Congress, Sanders in 1981 managed to get elected mayor of Burlington, Vt., where he restricted property rights for landlords, set price controls and raised property taxes to pay for communal land trusts…
In 1985, he traveled to [Nicaragua] to celebrate the rise to power of the Marxist-Leninist Sandinista government. He called it a “heroic revolution.”…
Sanders also adopted a Soviet sister city outside Moscow and honeymooned with his second wife in the USSR. He put up a Soviet flag in his office, shocking even the Birkenstock-wearing local liberals. At the time, the Evil Empire was on the march around the world, and threatening the US with nuclear annihilation.
Then, in 1989, as the West was on the verge of winning the Cold War, Sanders addressed the national conference of the US Peace Council — a known front for the Communist Party USA, whose members swore an oath not only to the Soviet Union but to “the triumph of Soviet power in the US.”
