On Monday morning, U.S. ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell posted an update on the health of journalist Andy Ngo, who was viciously attacked during protests in Portland, Oregon, by far-left Antifa members. Mr. Grenell demanded the Justice Department investigate the crimes against Ngo, echoing a tweet the ambassador posted early Sunday morning.
“I just spoke with [Andy Ngo]. He is strong but still hurt,” Grenell informed the public. “He is trying to recover while watching for signs to make sure his brain bleed doesn’t get worse.”
“This attack on him must be investigated,” he added, tagging the Justice Department Twitter account.
The ambassador said on Sunday morning that he has asked the Justice Department to investigate the assault on Ngo. “I can’t just sit by and watch my friend be brutally attacked,” he wrote.
Grenell, who made history last April as the highest ranking openly gay official in a Republican administration, smacked the “intolerant radicals” who attacked Ngo, claiming they dislike the journalist because he “happens to be gay, Asian and conservative.”
“This was a pre-meditated attack on someone because intolerant radicals don’t like that Andy happens to be gay, Asian and conservative,” he said, quote-tweeting a post from Ngo highlighting his injuries. “They targeted him publicly before their protest. Mayor [Ted Wheeler] knew this was coming. The people of Oregon must speak up today.”
Covering the protests in Portland on Saturday, Ngo was robbed, beaten, and had milkshakes thrown on him. According to Portland Police, some of the “milkshakes” being thrown by the far-left group reportedly contained quick-dry cement.
“Police have received information that some of the milkshakes thrown today during the demonstration contained quick-drying cement. We are encouraging anyone hit with a substance today to report it to police,” the department tweeted.
The brutal assault was captured on video. Ngo reportedly suffered a brain bleed and other injuries.
“Attacked by antifa. Bleeding. They stole my camera equipment. No police until after. waiting for ambulance. If you have evidence Of attack please help,” the Quillette editor said in the aftermath of the assault.
This was not the first time Ngo was a target of Antifa’s, either. The journalist was attacked by group members in November 2018 while covering a “Him Too” rally and Antifa counter-protests. “I was assaulted by a mob of masked individuals in black. They also targeted my equipment. They called me a fascist & Islamophobe. They said my parents & grandparents would be ashamed of me. It feels surreal to be treated this way by people who don’t even know me,” Ngo said, adding, “I feel a bit rattled by the experience. I’ve had things thrown at me before but today I was surrounded, cursed, & pushed by Antifa.”
