This UK Soldier Became The First Transgender Gay Muslim Woman

A transgender, gay Muslim woman would be a leftist social justice warrior’s dream. Fortunately for them, a person like this exists.

Lucy Vallender, formerly known as Laurens Vallender, is a former British solider who underwent a sex-change operation in 2010 after feeling for years that he was a woman in a man’s body.

“I tried to do macho things you know to stop how I was thinking, but it didn’t work because I was trying to be someone I wasn’t,” Vallender told the UK Daily Mail. “I felt differently to others – I was attracted to men.”

Vallender joined the Territorial Army to take one last stab at being a man, but eventually resigned and began cross-dressing and dating men.

After undergoing the sex-change operation, Vallender decided to take the next step toward social justice warrior lore by converting to Islam.

“I did it because it is a nice religion – so peaceful,” Vallender said. “I felt good and I had something to believe in. I felt happy and relieved at last – the happiest I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Vallender eventually married a Muslim man, who didn’t know that Vallender was a transgender until after the wedding. But being a transgender gay Muslim woman hasn’t been all sunshine and unicorns for Vallender, as he faced some harsh treatment from members of his mosque.

“The way they treated me was disgusting,” Vallender said. “They asked me questions about my bra cup size, asked about my Adam’s apple, about my period and asked to see my birth certificate. They said I had to pray with the men so I left and pray at home instead.”

There may be more people out there like Vallender, since there are organizations like The Safra Project that is “a resource project working on issues relating to lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender women who identify as Muslim religiously and/or culturally (Muslim LBT women).”
