The White Student Union (WSU) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) has come up with its latest parody of the racially divisive Black Lives Matter movement: White History Month.
In a Facebook post earlier this morning, the WSU announced that it will designate a month to celebrating societal contributions made by people of European descent:
To fight back against unfair treatment of PED, we at the UCSB WSU are declaring this month to be White History Month. We will be celebrating contributions made by PED to world heritage, arts, architecture, and developments of all sorts.
We begin with a painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps, painted by Jacques-Louis David.
The post was accompanied with a painting of French militarist Napoleon Bonaparte:
Black History Month (observed in February) is often a sensitive topic for both people of color and non-color in the U.S. Discussions over the necessity of White History Month often crop up around this time of year. A blog called “When Is White History Month?” protests that pride in one’s heritage is only excused when displayed by black people. The Huffington Post recently felt the need to publish a long letter explaining “Why We Don’t Need A White History Month.”
In the past, campus organizations at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) were denied funding and on some occasions even suspended for attempting to criticize Black History Month, which they see as counterproductive to racial desegregation.
The WSU told The Daily Wire it hoped to give a platform for white students at UCSB who feel discriminated against, to celebrate a month designated just for them.
“Too often the needs and difficulties of PED are swept under the rug in the name of ‘diversity’ and ‘inclusion,’” the WSU said in a statement. “We hope that this campaign to celebrate White History Month will give marginalized PED the confidence to feel proud of their Europe@n heritage.”
