Another satirical tweet by a right-leaning commentator has resulted in yet more bad publicity and online mockery directed at the Left.
Similar to the case of Allie Stuckey, who posted an obviously satirical fake interview with socialist Democratic candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to the outrage of many left-wing media outlets, a post by TPUSA’s Candace Owens, which explicitly states that it’s satirical, was condemned by left-leaning Twitter before the platform realized its egregious mistake.
Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro tells the remarkable, though unsurprising, story:
In its latest demonstration of political disingenuousness, Twitter temporarily suspended Turning Point USA communications director Candace Owens’ account — after she took racist tweets from New York Times editorial board member Sarah Jeong, replaced the word “whites” with “blacks,” and tweeted them out again. For example, Owens tweeted:
Though Owens states in the tweet that the “above statements are from @nytimes editor @sarahjeong” and that she “simply swapped out the word ‘white’ for ‘black’,” the platform suspended her.
Realizing the embarrassing and rather revealing mistake, Twitter reinstated her and issued the following explanation and apology:
Twitter takes reports of violations of the Twitter Rules very seriously. After reviewing your account, it looks like we made an error. This was our mistake and we’ve apologized to the account owner for the error.
As Shapiro notes, the explanation does not include how exactly Twitter made the error. “Human complaints? Algorithms? We have no way of knowing. But suffice it to say that the double standard in social media just received another piece of bolstering evidence.”
In response, Twitter is getting a heavy dose of backlash on its own platform. Some examples including from Donald Trump Jr.:
