A report published last week by left-leaning publication The Atlantic revealed that President Trump has seen his support among African Americans double.
While the headline of the report, “The Voters Abandoning Donald Trump,” attempts to present the information in as dark a light as possible, the third paragraph acknowledges this Narrative-defying fact: Trump “has established a modest but durable beachhead among African American and Hispanic men, even while confronting overwhelming opposition from women in those demographic groups”:
In every age group, and at every level of education, about twice as many African American men as women gave Trump positive marks. In all, 23 percent of black men approved of Trump’s performance versus 11 percent of black women. “The outlier here isn’t [black] men … it’s [black] women, where you have near-universal disapproval of Trump,” said Cornell Belcher, a Democratic pollster who studies African American voters. Still, black men are one of the few groups for which Trump’s 2017 average approval rating significantly exceeds his 2016 vote share.
As The Daily Wire highlighted, Trump’s overall score of 17% approval among African Americans more than doubles the 8% who voted for him in 2016. His 23% approval among black men dwarfs the 13% of black men who voted for him; while the 11% support among black women nearly triples the 4% who voted for him.
So what’s driving the improvement? Well, in a tweet late Monday, Trump offered his theory. “Unemployment for Black Americans is the lowest ever recorded. Trump approval ratings with Black Americans has doubled. Thank you, and it will get even (much) better!” he wrote.
A week earlier, Trump highlighted the record low unemployment among African Americans and the major improvement seen among Hispanics.
“African American unemployment is the lowest ever recorded in our country,” he wrote. “The Hispanic unemployment rate dropped a full point in the last year and is close to the lowest in recorded history. Dems did nothing for you but get your vote!”
Over the weekend, Trump touted some of the eye-opening economic numbers under his watch, including tweeting a quote from Stuart Varney:
“President Trump is not getting the credit he deserves for the economy. Tax Cut bonuses to more than 2,000,000 workers. Most explosive Stock Market rally that we’ve seen in modern times. 18,000 to 26,000 from Election, and grounded in profitability and growth. All Trump, not [Obama] … big unnecessary regulation cuts made it all possible” (among many other things). “President Trump reversed the policies of President Obama, and reversed our economic decline.”
As highlighted by The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra, economists have weighed in on which president should get credit for the current economic boom — and Trump will like their conclusion:
The Wall Street Journal asked 68 economists spread across academia and throughout the business world who was responsible for the booming economy, and, “happily for President Trump, the pros agree with him,” The Hill reported. “A recent survey of economists suggest it is President Trump, and not Obama, who should be taking a bow.”
