Trump Advisor Gen. Mike Flynn: ‘Americans Do Not Feel Represented…Fed Up With The Bullsh*t.’

In a no-hold-barred interview with popular German news site, Spiegel Online, Trump foreign policy advisor retired US Army lieutenant general Mike Flynn blasted President Obama for an ill-advised foreign policy record.

“Americans are fed up with the bullshit they heard for many years,” asserted Flynn. “They want the truth, they want to believe what their leaders are saying again.”

Pointing specifically to Obama’s reckless and politically-motivated decision to abruptly pull US troops from Iraq, Flynn flexed his military chops and detailed the disastrous consequences of the White House’s “lead from behind” strategy. “Obama’s decision to leave, to not sustain the victory that resulted after eight years of fighting, from 2003 to 2011 in Iraq, was another incredibly stupid decision,” said Flynn. “It was totally based on politics, not based on any notion of national security. It’s a nightmare for our national security.” He continued, highlighting the mess in Libya:

And then you have the Libya intervention. You look at Libya, and you go, “Jesus, why the hell did we do that?” That’s beyond stupid. That’s so irresponsible and dangerous for our national security and frankly for the national security of Europe because you go and you look at where a lot of these refugees are coming out of, they’re coming out of Misrata and Tripoli.

Flynn knows what he’s talking about. He served as Director of National Intelligence for two years (July 2012-August 2014) under President Obama himself.

With a reference to Obama’s now ironic “Don’t do stupid shit” foreign policy manifesto, Flynn passionately defended Donald Trump by suggesting that his candidate would chart a different course forward. “He would avoid those stupid decisions. When you look back, history is not going to be kind to these last 16 years,” explained the general.

When asked about how Trump’s turbulent disposition may affect decision-making as the Commander-in-Chief, Flynn advanced the recycled campaign narrative that the real-estate mogul is evolving his positions. “I know Donald Trump as a very adaptive person,” Flynn noted. “He adapts to the great challenges, with his own sort of street smarts and his instincts.”

Contrasting an anemic Obama with a pugilistic Trump, the retired three-star general defended his GOP nominee’s bellicose language on the campaign trail:

Trump is a fighter. Imagine a boxing match. You go into that fight bigger than you are. And he learned a lot in the last months. The quotes you are talking about are months old. Remember the box fight: You start as a southpaw, you go back to fighting as a right-handed fighter.

Accordingly, Flynn spent much of the interview reframing his candidate’s obtuse comments about international affairs. Trump’s foreign policy-illiteracy has been a major liability for the campaign since day one. In addition to suggesting that South Korea and Japan should acquire nuclear weapons, the real estate mogul has flirted with the idea of abandoning Washington’s commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), America’s most powerful bulwark against Russian expansionism.

Flynn addressed the NATO controversy directly. “It doesn’t mean that President Trump comes into office and NATO goes away,” said the general. “But I would say that NATO as a political alliance does need to be relooked at in terms of everything — resourcing, capabilities.”

While Flynn is well-experienced in military tactics, the same cannot be said about the candidate he’s advising. Of course, the general is attempting to reflavor Trump’s policy prescriptions in a way that’s more palatable to both voters and the defense community. Unfortunately, Flynn seems to be putting lipstick on a pig, superimposing his own, more-coherent interpretations of Trumpian rhetoric in order to make sense of an nonsensical candidate.

Gen. Flynn is scheduled to speak at the RNC convention in Cleveland this week.
