Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, made quite an impression this past October while walking the red carpet at the premiere of “The Eternals.” Fans were used to the 15-year-old dressing in more masculine fashions like suits, but for this event the teen had her makeup done and wore a floral dress and earrings. She exuded confidence, happiness, and a distinctly feminine look that was quite a surprise to many.
No one could deny Shiloh looked lovely walking the red carpet in her mother’s Dior gown, which Angelina originally wore to the 2019 premiere of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” Shiloh’s changed sense of fashion also sparked conversation as to what may have happened, since the teen had been more interested in exploring traditionally masculine fashion, and had even given herself the name “John” at one point. Given all that, it’s a little shocking that Brad and Angelina never declared their daughter was really their son.
These observations are not without reason. Celebrity parents are often the first to celebrate the news that their children are trans. Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade are a great example of this phenomenon, as they’ve become advocates for their biological son Zaya (formerly Zion), 13, who came out as transgender in 2020. The couple now says Zaya is their daughter. “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon also has a trans child, as does Charlize Theron and a handful of others.
Shiloh never declared herself trans or took any steps beyond dressing in masculine clothing and cutting her hair short during adolescence. However, based on interviews Brad and Angelina gave and comments they made about their daughter, it almost felt inevitable that the young girl’s life was heading in that direction. Model Amber Rose even mistakenly called Shiloh trans in 2014 and celebrated that she was born into the “perfect” family for identifying that way.
Rose shared a photo to her Instagram of Shiloh, then eight, dressed in a suit and tie for the premiere of Angelina’s film, “Unbroken.”
“How gorgeous is John Jolie Pitt?! Born into the perfect family for him. #TransKids #LoveurKidsNoMatterWhat#Support,” the caption of the now-deleted post said, according to E! News.
It’s not unprecedented that Rose believed Shiloh had “transitioned” into a boy based on what she was wearing, especially considering how mainstream media portrays trans children. Also, Brad and Angelina were not shy about sharing Shiloh’s tendencies to identify with her masculine qualities.
While speaking with Oprah in 2008, Brad addressed his daughter’s desire to be called by a boy’s name.
“She only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it’s a Peter Pan thing,” he said when Shiloh was just two. “So we’ve got to call her John. ‘Shi, do you want…’ ‘John. I’m John.’ And then I’ll say, ‘John, would you like some orange juice?’ And she goes, ‘No!’ So, you know, it’s just that kind of stuff that’s cute to parents and it’s probably really obnoxious to other people.”
“Angie’s militant about it. She’s right on top of it,” he continued. “Thank God, because I’m always forgetting something.”
Angelina also discussed her daughter’s sense of fashion.
“Shiloh, we feel has Montenegro style. It’s how people dress there,” Angelina said in a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair. “She likes tracksuits, she likes [regular] suits. So it’s a suit with a tie and a jacket and slacks, or a tracksuit. She likes to dress like a boy. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”
The mom of six said something similar in another 2010 interview. The “Girl, Interrupted” star had a surprisingly refreshing take on kids going through phases and how to handle them.
“I don’t think it’s for the world to interpret anything,” Angelina said in reference to Shiloh. “She likes to dress like a boy and wants her hair cut like a boy and she wanted to be called ‘John’ for a while. Some kids wear capes and want to be Superman and she wants to be like her brothers. It’s who she is. It’s been a surprise to us and it’s really interesting, but she’s so much more than that — she’s funny and sweet and pretty. But she does love a tie . . .”
Then came the big change. In November 2021, following the premiere, an insider told Life & Style that Brad said he was “happy” to see Shiloh “coming out of her shell.”
Again, Shiloh never claimed to be trans,but users on Twitter couldn’t help but notice the huge difference between how she appeared as a child and how, at 15, the celebrity teen is now growing into her femininity.
“Think of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt: if she had woke parents she’d now be mutilated and forever messed-up by hormones,” one person shared.
“Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. From dressing like a boy to red carpet glamorous. Let these kids find themselves after they go through puberty naturally,” another agreed.
“Good thing Shiloh Jolie-Pitt wasn’t pressured into taking hormone therapy meds when she was “John” as “a boy” for a few years as a child…,” someone else on Twitter said.
Many adult women now muse over the thought that, in today’s social climate, there’s a chance they could have been labeled as trans by their parents, teachers, or even think it themselves just because they had tomboy tendencies. They’ve now grown up and grown out of that phase — without stunting their puberty through hormone blockers and disfiguring surgeries.
It seems like a miracle that Shiloh Jolie-Pitt escaped the trans craze currently sweeping the nation, especially since she is growing up in Hollywood.
