In his wild and wildly entertaining press conference on Thursday, Trump alluded to the forces working behind the scenes to undermine his presidency. After his national security advisor Gen. Mike Flynn abruptly resigned Monday night, reports surfaced citing “Obama loyalists” in the intelligence community effectively staging a coup by leaking classified information on Flynn to force him out. But is there really an “Obama shadow government” at work or is this just the stuff of yet another conspiracy theory?
The Federalist’s John Daniel Davidson suggests that the outline of a kind of “Obama shadow government” appears to be taking shape, with evidence of some key players within the federal government overtly and covertly working to protect Obama’s legacy, while a coalition of private entities have openly declared their intention to continue to promote his agenda. And then, of course, there’s Obama himself, who announced to all that he has no intention of walking away from the fray.
“Less than a month out of office, the broad contours of Obama’s post-presidency career are already taking shape,” writes Davidson. “Obama and his loyalists, it seems, will remain in the center of the political fray, officially and unofficially, in an organized effort to undermine the Trump administration.”
As potential evidence, Davidson points to the “bizarre scandal” surrounding the ouster of Flynn, which was “prompted by a series of coordinated and anonymous leaks from current and former Obama administration officials in our domestic intelligence agencies.” While Flynn might indeed deserve some criticism for his actions, which still remain uncertain amid contradictory reports, one thing seems clear: “the leaks are part of a larger, loosely organized effort now underway to preserve Obama’s legacy.”
Sound too “conspiracy theory”-esque? Davidson says no: Obama himself declared that he was going to remain politically active — even choosing to remain in D.C. rather than move back to Chicago and starting a new activist foundation — and that he indeed has “loyalists” in both the private and public sector is unquestionable.
Then there’s Obama’s partnership with his former AG Eric Holder and the Senate Democratic leadership:
Obama has also announced he’ll be working with former Attorney General Eric Holder on a political action group called the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Its goal is to get Democrats elected at the state and local level ahead of the next redrawing of congressional districts. Last month, Obama reportedly met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to strategize about redistricting.
And don’t forget Obama’s Organizing for America, which has over 250 offices across the nation and is starting to really get things cranking to protect Obamacare and other vulnerable pieces of Obama’s legacy.
Add the sympathetic media to the members of the “Obama shadow government,” and you’ve got a lot of entities working in concert to make sure America is never “great again.”
