Despite all the evidence to the contrary, including the unassailable fact that conservatives have endured a non-stop cavalcade of the Left’s vitriolic hate since 2016, Spike Lee says that Donald Trump’s presidency opened the gates for hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan to run free.
“This guy in the White House has given the green light for the Klan, for the alt-right, for the neo-Nazis to come out in the open. There is no need for the so-called dog-whistle anymore, they are in full daylight,” Lee said in an interview with The Guardian.
Asked about the future of the U.S., Lee said: “I can’t help thinking it’s going to be ugly. What is really amazing is these House Republicans. How do they sleep at night? They are up there co-signing this hatred…”
Lee added: “I have faith in [special counsel Robert] Mueller. May God hold him and protect him, that’s all I can say! Let Mueller do his job!”
Lee, of course, is in campaigning mode with these statements, given that his newest film, “BlacKkKlansman,” comes out on August 10 – the first anniversary of the Charlottesville, Virginia rally of white nationalists that left one innocent woman dead. The movie is based on an autobiographical book about a black American detective out to expose the KKK.
At a press conference following the world premiere of the film back in May, Lee drew specific parallels between the film and Trump’s presidency.
“That motherf***er was given a chance to say we are about love, and not hate, and that motherf***er did not denounce the motherf***ing Klan, the Alt-Right, and those Nazi motherf***ers,” said Lee at the time. “It was a defining moment, and he could’ve said to the world … that we were better than that.”
The trailer for “BlacKkKlansman” also features a scene in which former KKK Grand Wizard gives a toast to other members in the name of “America First,” a clear on-the-nose attempt to tie Trump supporters in with white supremacists.
However, the trailer does inadvertently support a Christian’s right to not bake a gay wedding cake based on moral convictions. At the conclusion, a black server at this “America First” party says he would not have taken the job if he had known it was a Klan meeting.
