What a fascinating decade it’s been, both in real life and in the movies. We saw the Avengers assemble and Star Wars strike back. The exposure of Harvey Weinstein’s harassment led to a toppling house of cards that revealed a deep brokenness in Hollywood’s power structure. Streaming services exploded, to the point that many now feel overwhelmed by the number of options.
Fandom became divided over politics in film, with some on the Left viewing movies as a microphone with which to get their message out, and many on the Right turning their backs on the film industry completely. As a conservative film critic, it has been fascinating – and often discouraging – to see the trends in film discussion, as people on all sides dismiss any movie that even hints at an opposing viewpoint, regardless of artistry.
