On Monday night, aspiring musician Timothy Heller came forward with allegations that “The Voice” finalist Melanie Martinez molested and raped her after she repeatedly denied the singer’s sexual advances.
Heller said she considered Martinez her “best friend” at the time of the alleged rape.
Captioning a lengthy Twitter post describing the alleged incident, Heller wrote that she wasn’t going to name her abuser at first, but now believes “it’s important for you all to know this is about Melanie Martinez.”
“I have kept this secret for years, convincing myself that it wasn’t a big deal and I wasn’t hurt by it,” she started the post. “The thought of accepting that my best friend raped me seems insane. Even typing that doesn’t feel real to me. … It’s hard to say someone you loves raped you. Someone you STILL love.”
“When faced with a friend who really needed help though, I can honestly say she let me down completely,” she continued.
“One night during a sleepover, she became increasingly interested in my sexual preferences,” she wrote. “She began asking me while in bed if I would ever have sex with her.”
“I repeatedly said no,” said Heller, who disclosed that she had been sexually abused prior to the alleged incident.
The next night, Martinez allegedly convinced Heller to smoke weed with her and then proceeded to rape her.
Martinez started by allegedly groping Heller’s breasts and molesting her. Then, Heller says, Martinez “performed oral sex on me and then I was penetrated with a sex toy without being asked.”
“She knew I didn’t want to, I made that clear,” said Heller, adding that she was “completely not reciprocating.”
“The only reason I do this now is because I’m hoping because of recent events, people will believe me,” she added.
Heller then asked for people to take her accusations seriously, clarifying: “Girls can rape girls.”
“I beg you to imagine her role in this being a man,” she wrote. “Girls can rape girls. Best friends can rape best friends. Friendships does not equal consent. Silence doesn’t equal consent. I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to convince myself of these things.”
Martinez acknowledged the encounter but denied any coercion in a statement she posted on Tuesday via Twitter, saying Heller “never said no to what we chose to do together.”
“I am horrified and saddened by the statements and story told by Timothy Heller. What she and I shared was a close friendship,” wrote the singer.
“We tried to help each other. We both had pain in dealing with our individual demons,” she added. “She never said no to what we chose to do together. And although we parted ways, I am sending her love and light always.”
