Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) is not making positive returns for publicly slamming President Trump in the midst of a book tour. According to Public Policy Polling, Senator Flake’s approval rating in his home state is at an abysmal 18% with 69% of respondents indicating that they are either voting for his unnamed Democratic opponent (47%) or remain uncertain as to who to elect to the Senate (22%).
This does not look good for Flake, who faces reelection in 2018. He also penned an article in Politico chastising Republicans for going along with Trump’s non-conservative policies and for throwing out rule books for convenience. He said the following at the end of his piece:
So, where should Republicans go from here? First, we shouldn’t hesitate to speak out if the president “plays to the base” in ways that damage the Republican Party’s ability to grow and speak to a larger audience. Second, Republicans need to take the long view when it comes to issues like free trade: Populist and protectionist policies might play well in the short term, but they handicap the country in the long term. Third, Republicans need to stand up for institutions and prerogatives, like the Senate filibuster, that have served us well for more than two centuries.
As Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro opined earlier this week, Flake’s commentary did not curry good favor from Democrats and the Left, who believe Flake’s only redemption is to vote for progressive policies. He also made the following warning:
This should be a lesson for conservatives: no matter how intellectually honest you are with regard to your own side, no matter what moral standard you hold them to, you will be castigated alongside those whose behavior you condemn if you share political priorities. That’s not an excuse to toss morality out the window.
If Flake does not want to lose grasp on his power, then he might want to consider listening to his constituents.
