In an interview published on Friday in Marie Claire Magazine, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker declared that she is “not a feminist,” and is “so tired of the separation.”
Of course, this break from Hollywood dogma left an opening for the ever-tolerant liberal media to swiftly move in and ridicule her. Surprise, surprise.
“I am not a feminist,” Parker boldly told the feminist magazine. “I don’t think I qualify. I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don’t even want to separate it anymore. I’m so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally.”
In a similar tone, Parker made headlines by rejecting feminism last year, calling herself a “humanist” instead.
Following up, the actress was asked about other women in Hollywood who are supposedly “speaking out” about so-called women’s issues (aka abortion and the mythical gender pay gap). Parker simply replied by applauding women like actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson.
“Listen, Jennifer Lawrence deserves every bit as much as her male counterpart. It’s indisputable,” she said. “Emma Watson is an amazing young woman, and it’s important for her to talk about women’s issues. She isn’t concerned about herself. Women are paying the bills, getting it done, getting the kids here and there. The more we address that, we are all going to be better.”
The actress was also asked about the phony gender pay gap–a litmus test of sorts for female Hollywood elites. The Sex and the City star half-coherently explained that she “would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender.”
In other words, Parker isn’t exactly some rare non-conforming starlet who rejects phony victimhood narratives completely, but she does understand, at least on some level, how divisive and harmful third-wave feminism is. Even still, this lukewarm rejection was met with ridicule and undermining from feminists in media.
For example, The Wrap explained that Parker was actually a feminist; she’s just too stupid to know she is: “One has to wonder if Parker is aware that despite saying she is not a feminist that her ideas about gender equality sound an awful lot like feminism.”
Jezebel called Parker’s rejection of feminism a “disappointment,” mockingly calling it an “annual tradition” for the actress to “crawl out of hibernation” to remind us of her sinful ideology: “In what may or may not become an annual tradition, Sarah Jessica Parker crawled out of hibernation to remind us that she is not a feminist—but the real disappointment here is that she didn’t even have the courtesy to dust off her old Sanderson Sisters drag and opine in song while flying around on an old mop.”
Salon slammed Parker too, informing the actress that “it’s okay to say the ‘f-word,'” and suggesting that she read our social justice war-waging president’s letter about feminism he blogged in a fashion magazine on Thursday.
Calm down ladies, Parker is allowed to reject the feminist label, you conforming, victimhood-seeking drones.
