At least two Republicans who were finalists for President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick have been informed that they were not chosen for the spot.
Multiple publications have reported that Trump, who is expected to officially announce his pick at 4:30 p.m. EST, has informed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum were not selected.
Other candidates believed to be in the running for vice president include Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).
Fox News reported that Rubio was not selected because of constitutional complications that stem from him living in the state of Florida.
“The source said that over the last 10 days or so the conversations between Rubio and team Trump focused on the constitutional concern about both men living in Florida,” one of the network’s reporter posted on X. “Fox is told both teams wanted to be more confident there wouldn’t be a legal fight over the issue and they couldn’t be 100% sure of that.”
Trump said during an interview on Sunday that he has changed the theme for his speech at the Republican National Convention after he was shot during an assassination attempt on Saturday.
Trump, who sets the tone for the convention, told the Washington Examiner that he initially planned on hammering President Joe Biden throughout his speech.
“Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” he said.
Trump said that his original plan was to maximize excitement among his most ardent supporters, but his speech will now reflect his belief that the assassination attempt has “changed the election campaign entirely,” the report said.
He said that his address would focus on unity and bringing the country together in light of what happened.
“It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance,” he said. “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago.”
