Prince Charles has been in love with Camilla Parker Bowles for decades now and has been married to her since 2005. This pair took their courtship very, very slowly after the death of Princess Diana, Charles’s beloved ex-wife who was known as “the people’s princess.” The United Kingdom still mourns Diana and some have only begrudgingly accepted Camilla as the future king’s bride.
All along it was believed that Camilla would take on the title of Princess Consort when the Prince of Wales ascended the throne as a sort of symbolic deference to Diana. Now upon the celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year as reigning monarch, Her Majesty is proposing an entirely different plan.
“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me,” Elizabeth wrote in a statement, which was shared on the official Royal website and the Royal Family’s verified Instagram account.
“And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Royal fans were quick to share their opinions on the matter.
“Diana, the real Queen forever,” one person commented. Another agreed, “Diana, the one and only.”
They have a hard time accepting Camilla because Charles had an affair with her while he was still married to Diana, which was one major reason they wound up getting divorced. Royal historians have made the claim that the marriage was doomed regardless. But this has done nothing to improve Camilla’s public image in relation to Diana. She’ll always be seen as the home wrecker of the royal family.
But there are also plenty of royal fans who are happy to see Camilla be promised a title which she technically should have considering she’s married to the future king. Second-in-line to the throne Prince William “liked” the announcement on Instagram from the account he shares with wife Kate Middleton. Considering the fact that Princess Diana was his mother, he would be one of the most likely to take issue with his stepmother receiving such an important title.
And Camilla? She allegedly doesn’t care much one way or the other.
“Friends and family know [the title of queen] is not something she wants — she has said as much,” biographer Penny Junor wrote in her book, “The Duchess.”
“[Camilla] is in this position because of her love of the man, not because of her desire to be anything more than a support to him. The whole business of his accession is something she dreads and, in her inimitable way, is choosing not to think about.”
There’s a good chance the Queen’s wishes will be honored on this matter. But that doesn’t mean Diana loyalists will ever agree with it.
