When you give to United Way, you might be indirectly funding abortion giant Planned Parenthood, conservative watchdog group 2ndVote has exposed.
Last week, 2ndVote revealed that 62 United Way affiliates poured nearly $3 million into Planned Parenthood in 2016. “According to Planned Parenthood, an abortion can cost up to $950,” said 2ndVote Executive Director Robert Kuykendall. “This means United Way dollars essentially paid for the equivalent of at least 2,901 Planned Parenthood abortions over the course of a single year.”
The watchdog group seeks to empower conservatives and pro-lifers with full transparency with respect to how the conservatives’ donations or daily commerce fund pro-abortion and left-wing groups. With the knowledge provided, conservatives can, metaphorically speaking, cast their “second vote” with their wallets.
“Every year, 2ndVote takes an extensive look at United Way affiliates that help fund the world’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood,” Kuykendall said in a press release to The Daily Wire. “Our research is designed to give conservatives and pro-life activists a resource to make sure their charitable donations won’t be used to support Planned Parenthood’s abortion business.”
2ndVote tracked 1,200 United Way affiliates via IRS Form 990 filings and supporting documents and found that $2,756,799 was sent to Planned Parenthood organizations in 2016. The group’s latest findings “indicate an increase of $168,806 from the $2,590,994 United Way funneled to Planned Parenthood in 2015.”
“2ndVote’s research found United Way affiliates in 29 states with financial ties to Planned Parenthood. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and Florida are the top five states for United Way support for the abortion giant,” added the press release.
“Year after year, we find United Way’s greatest financial support for Planned Parenthood occurs in so-called battleground states. Given Planned Parenthood’s political presence in these states, it is especially concerning that United Way would be a top donor and financial conduit in these areas,” noted Kuykendall.
United Way responded to the 2ndVote report, not by refuting the claims, but by highlighting that “United Way Worldwide does not control funding decisions by local United Ways.”
“All local funding decisions are made by the individual United Ways with the input of local leaders and community stakeholders. United Way Worldwide does not control funding decisions by local United Ways. In many instances, funding for Planned Parenthood is the result of specific direction from individual donors, including those from the United Way Worldwide Donor Advised Giving program,” reads a post on UnitedWay.org, adding, “only a small number (less than 3 percent) provide direct support to Planned Parenthood. The amount of financial support represents less than one tenth of one percent of total United Way revenue.”
Some pro-life groups, such as Students for Life of America (SFLA) and LifeSiteNews, are calling for a boycott of United Way from fellow pro-lifers to send a message to the organization’s president.
“SFLA and LifeSiteNews are urging pro-life Americans and all who care about helping the poor and downtrodden to send an email to United Way’s president, demanding the organization stop funding Planned Parenthood through all local chapters immediately,” reported LifeSiteNews.
Signaling some success, 2ndVote pointed out, “The 62 United Way organizations that contribute to Planned Parenthood represent the lowest number for a single year since the project started.”
“Planned Parenthood is being exposed for what it is: an abortion business and a left-wing political operation. We believe that our research is giving conservatives and pro-life activists a resource to hold organizations like United Way accountable. Using our donated dollars as leverage is a great way to get non-profits to stop supporting Planned Parenthood’s abortion agenda,” said Kuykendall.
