The heckling of CNN reporter Jim Acosta by a crowd of Trump supporters has flared up tribalist impulses. One such person was Politico reporter Marc Caputo, who has now apologized after referring to the hecklers as “garbage people.”
At a rally Tuesday night in Tampa, Acosta experienced the wrath of Trump fans who belligerently shouted “CNN sucks! CNN sucks!” behind his back during a segment. The chants and boos were at one point led by the group “Blacks For Trump.” In response, Acosta tweeted out his fear that Trump’s rhetoric against the “fake news” media would result in violence against journalists.
