Despite lockdown measures across the country, the ratings for the woke 2021 Golden Globes couldn’t catch a break: the star-studded event saw a viewership crash of a stunning 64%.
“Just 6.9 million people tuned in to the Golden Globes on Sunday, according to Nielsen ratings,” The Associated Press reported Tuesday, noting that the anemic viewership “barely beat the year when a writer’s strike forced NBC to show a news conference announcing the winners.”
Last year’s award show was notably hosted by politically incorrect comedian and actor Ricky Gervais, who took repeated swipes at Hollywood. The ratings for that show, with 18.4 million viewers, more than doubled the 2021 show, co-hosted by the woke Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
The AP reported that NBC “anticipated a ratings bloodbath,” noting that Americans are “sick of Zoom meetings”:
“For a country sick of Zoom meetings, most of the nominees appeared remotely and there was no red carpet. Some stars dressed for the occasion, others didn’t bother. ‘Ted Lasso’ star Jason Sudeikis wore a sweatshirt for his acceptance speech.”
The seeming excuse from AP withstanding, streaming services have seen a massive boost during the pandemic. Yahoo! reported last month:
Video streaming services have had a great 2020 thanks to the pandemic that kept millions at home with no other option for entertainment but watching videos online. Moreover, the pandemic also coincided with the launch of a number of video streaming services, which cashed in on the situation by immediately adding millions of subscribers that gave a boost to their revenues.
Additionally, Yahoo! reported, the average American viewer by December was paying about $9 more in subscription fees than they were in April.
In other words, Americans are seemingly watching more TV, but apparently the Globes were not a top priority for them this year.
Fey and Poehler, during their opening monologue, addressed a diversity controversy among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), Deadline reported:
Addressing the white elephant in the room, Fey and Poehler called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) as “90 international no Black journalists” who “attend movie junkets in search of a better life.” The hosts barely attempted to get laughs out of their concession that the Globes nominate “a lot of flashy garbage” or that the awards “are all a scam invented by Big Red Carpet,” and went entirely serious when Fey said the HFPA has no Black members.
“You gotta change that,” Fey said, seeming to hold out hope for a better next year.
Gervais took a different approach: roasting the liberal Hollywood elite for their woke posturing while living degenerate lives, highlighting friendships with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein to shady business deals with communist China.
“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech,” Gervais told Hollywood. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God — and f*** off, okay?”
