People in Kentucky are still suffering following the devastating storms and tornadoes that ripped across the state on Friday night.
Nearly 26,000 customers still don’t have power as of Monday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.
As The Daily Wire previously reported, Kentucky Gov. Beshear declared a state of emergency Friday night and said he activated the national guard and requested federal assistance.
“This has been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history and some areas have been hit in ways that are hard to put into words. To all of our Kentucky families that are impacted by this, we want you to know that we are here for you, we love you, and we are praying for you,” he said.
“We will get make it through this, we will rebuild,” Beshear added. “We are strong, resilient people, and we will be there every step of the way.”
Multiple prominent buildings were destroyed during the storms, including a candle factory in Mayfield, Kentucky, and an Amazon warehouse in Illinois.
“One of the tornadoes touched down in Edwardsville. During the storm, multiple agencies responded to a collapse at the Amazon distribution center near I-270 and Illinois Route 111. Officials are confirming fatalities,” Fox 2 Now reported. “Authorities said multiple people are trapped inside the warehouse, and there are reports of possibly 50 to 100 workers at the facility.”
Kentucky is not the only state in America suffering power outages due to recent severe storms. Tens of thousands of customers are without power in Michigan and New York due to powerful windstorms that affected the two states over the weekend, the Independent reported. As of this writing, more than 43,000 people in Michigan and more than 26,000 people in New York have no power.
Inclement weather in California has also knocked out power, with more than 35,000 people in California still without power. The Golden State suffered its first winter storm over the weekend, with Sacramento seeing the worst of the storm Monday morning, according to ABC 10.
Gov. Beshear became emotional Monday when he delivered an update on the impact of the storm in Kentucky, The Daily Wire reported.
“Like the folks in Western Kentucky, I’m not doing so well today,” Beshear said. “And I’m not sure how many of us are.” More from The Daily Wire:
Beshear also shared an emotional story regarding his notes for the media update.
“I was working on getting the confirmed deaths this morning and realized I was writing on the back of notes that one of my kids took from school. And here’s what it is. It’s notes on inertia. It means that an object that’s in motion will stay in motion. So we’re going to keep putting one foot in front of the other and push through this,” he said.
The governor also encouraged residents to get the help they need, promising “we’re going to be with you.”
“Everybody get the help you need, take care of yourself, and we’ll continue to provide updates. To the people of Western Kentucky, we’re not going anywhere. We’re going to be with you today, we’re going to be with you tomorrow, and we’re going to be there with you to rebuild,” Beshear said.
