Flint City Council member Maurice Davis, a life-long Democrat, announced his support for President Donald Trump’s reelection on Wednesday after voting for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Davis took the stage for a Trump rally in Michigan headlined by Vice President Mike Pence at Flint Bishop Airport. In a roughly three-minute speech prior to Pence speaking, Davis announced that he was switching his vote from blue to red for the presidential race while slamming the Democratic Party as “full of hate.”
“What an honor to be standing before you at a serious time like this in the world. Pandemic, the China virus or plague – I even caught it and was in intensive care twice,” Davis began. “The narrative has been spent. This is not a game, folks. President Trump and Vice President Pence, God use whoever he want to bring his people out of whatever the problem happen to be.”
“Right now the narrative has been spent, President Trump is full of hate. Let me tell you something, the Democrats are full of hate. I’m tired. I’m a Democrat, I’ve been a Democrat all my life, 64 years,” he continued. “The last four years I voted for Hillary Clinton. This year I decided to go with President Trump. I am not a bootlicker, I am not an Uncle Tom. I’m none of those things. I’m somebody that’s in a poor, impoverished community.”
Davis then spoke of the city of Flint, which is struggling to contain spiking rates of violence. Davis is pushing a proposed city law that would set a mandatory curfew on liquor stores, gas stations, and other businesses as officials attempt to cut down on attacks and murders that have increased around those locations after dark.
“People are losing everything, and when Mr. Trump said, ‘What the hell you got to lose?’ he was talking to me,” Davis said.
“This is what I got to gain, instead of being the divided states of America, it’s time to be the United States of America. Do y’all understand what I am telling you? I don’t want to hear fault. He who is without sin cast the first stone. We’re saved under grace. God use whoever he wants to such as times like these,” he continued.
“We’re tired of suffering and nobody give a damn about poor folks. President Trump, they reached out with nothing but love from y’all all over this nation. I don’t want to hear another time I’m a Trump supporter. I’m an American supporter. Y’all have more love. Now the Democrats call me every name but a child of God,” Davis said.

Trump is currently underwater in polling in Michigan. He trails Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden by 8.2 points, according to RealClearPolitics polling average. Trump won Michigan in 2016 by a thin margin of roughly 10,000 votes, or by about .3% of the total number of votes cast.
