At least nine Antifa protesters got themselves arrested on Thursday night outside Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro’s “Say No To Campus Thuggery” speech on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Most of the social justice activists/rioters were arrested for carrying “banned weapons”; at least one was arrested for assaulting police and another for disturbing the peace.
Among the nine arrested protesters was Fremont resident Hannah Benjamin, 22, who was taken in near Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue for “Battery on a Police Officer and carrying a banned weapon”:
Another arrested protester was San Francisco resident Sarah Roark, 44. Roark was also carrying a banned weapon. She was nabbed near Bancroft and Bowditch Street:
Another banned weapon-carrying protester who got himself arrested was Michael Paul Sullivan, 29, of Hayward, who was detained near where police grabbed Benjamin:
Around two hours after the event, Berkeley PD announced that they’d arrested a total of nine people, some of the details about whom the department issued a little later:
Here’s Eddy Robinson, 44, of Oakland, who was carrying a banned weapon near Dana Street and Durant Ave:
Next up: Kerem Celik, 18, hailing from Saratoga, who was nabbed for disturbing the peace near where Sullivan and Benjamin were arrested:
The other four protesters arrested were Noe Gonzalez Gudino, 24, from Richmond; Miguel Reyes, 21, of Colton; Jorge Cabanillas, 20, of Rialto, and Darin Bauer, 45, of Berkeley. Here’s a collection of all the mugshots:
Below is a report by the Bay Area’s KRON in which the channel highlights a few of the arrests and interviews two people who showed up for the protests that appear to be fans of Shapiro. One of the interviewees, Amber, identifies as a member of the LGBT community and noted that the violent leftists are attempting to coopt the community to promote their fascistic anti-free speech agenda.
As Shapiro highlights in his response to the events at Berkeley, the evening proved to be a big success in large part because the police were actually empowered to do their jobs and not allow the violence-embracing Antifa to wreak havoc, as they’ve done so many times over the past year.
In preparation for the event, Berkeley took unprecedented steps, sealing off several buildings and parking lots and setting up concrete barriers around the campus to try to contain the anticipated Antifa violence. The cost for the additional police presence was reportedly $1.5 million.
