A male feminist tried getting cheeky by editing out all the men from Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic “Saving Private Ryan,” and failed in the most embarrassing way possible.
The new “emasculated” cut of the movie came as a result of some internet troll releasing his own “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” edition cutting out all the women, or, as he explained, removing all the “Girlz Powah and other silly stuff.”
Even though “The Last Jedi” was an arguably awful film, one filled with feminist sermonizing, editing out all the women was an obviously sexist move. However, that movie was a fantasy about fake war in a presumably non-existent galaxy. “Saving Private Ryan” tells a fictional story, inspired by true events and set in a real war. It paid tribute to the many men who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom.
Could Twitter user Logan James, maker of the “emasculated” cut, have picked a more tasteful target, or at the very least, deliver on what he actually promised by editing out all the men? In the just over two-minutes-long cut of the film below, it may appear that all the men are MIA from the film, but looks can be deceiving:
Glamour magazine called Logan James an “Internet Hero” while The Wrap found it “pretty artsy.” SF Gate and NME also gave the new cut favorable reviews. Only one word to describe the effort: fail.
As the clip shows, the men actually did show up in the “emasculated” cut of Spielberg’s war epic; they were just six feet under the headstone crosses at the Normandy cemetery. Twitter users quickly noticed the glaring error:
For some random reason, Logan James went on to make a cut of “The Shawshank Redemption” with no men. That clocked in at just about 90 seconds.
