Leonardo DiCaprio and a number of other celebrities marched in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to speak out on the issue of climate change. As everyone knows, these celebrities are hypocrites.
DiCaprio, Al Gore and actor Lee Pace highlighted the big names who took part in the DC climate change march on Saturday; other celebrities like Mark Ruffalo and Jane Fonda tweeted support for the march. DiCaprio marched with indigenous people and held a sign that blared, “Climate change is real.”
Such virtue-signaling simply cannot be taken of seriously from these celebrities, who simply do not practice what they preach.
DiCaprio, for instance, claims that he offsets his supposed carbon emissions of 11 tons per year by planting trees. But his carbon footprint is likely much larger than that: (H/T: Forbes)
According to the World Bank, per capita carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. are about 19 tons per year. That’s of course an average, and rich people who take private jets and vacation on yachts have much higher carbon emissions than average.
In fact, a 2014 Daily Mail article noted, “DiCaprio took at least 20 trips across the nation and around the world this year alone – including numerous flights from New York to Los Angeles and back, a ski vacation to the French Alps, another vacation to the French Riviera, flights to London and Tokyo to promote his film Wolf of Wall Street, two trips to Miami and trip to Brazil to watch the World Cup.” The article further noted that if he had taken commercial airlines for all of those flights, the carbon dioxide emissions from those flights alone would amount to 44 tons. (Note: The article says “million tons”, but that’s clearly an error as a round-trip coast-to-coast commercial airliner generates about 2 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per person). But many of those flights were on private jets, which the article notes can have 37 times the personal carbon emissions of commercial flights.
Add to the fact that he owns several homes and vacations frequently on diesel-burning yachts, and the 11 ton per year number is clearly wishful thinking.
Gore is also quite the hypocrite. He sold his failed Current TV channel to Al Jazeera, the outlet that is funded by Qatar, which makes its money through … oil. Additionally, “Gore’s Tennessee mansion consumed nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually (more than twenty times the average U.S. citizen,” per Jason Mattera’s 2012 book Hollywood Hypocrites.
In fact, Mattera notes in that book that DiCaprio was gushing over a conversation that he and Gore had about climate change while on an airplane that was spewing carbon emissions.
“The dude describes himself having a conversation with Al Gore on a freaking plane and doesn’t even cringe in embarrassment,” Mattera wrote. “Even as he and Gore puff themselves up with self-importance and gush about saving the planet, the clouds are whizzing by their windows of their carbon-pooping plane. Unreal!“
Those voicing their support for the climate change march are also hypocrites. For instance, Mark Ruffalo loves to rail against fracking and oil companies yet has no problem flying on “an airplane loaded with 30,000 gallons of jet fuel to fly from New York to London for a British movie awards show,” per National Review.
In short, elite leftists who fancy themselves as environmentalist warriors against climate change are nothing more than hypocrites who are out of touch with the hardworking people of America. This is yet another example of why Donald Trump won in November.
