Vice President Kamala Harris said on Sunday that if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade it will open the door to restricting contraception and marriage rights.
Harris made the statement in a Twitter post ahead of the Supreme Court’s pending case that could return laws regarding abortion to individual states.
“The right to privacy that forms the basis of Roe v. Wade also protects the right to use contraception and the right to marry the person you love,” Harris wrote.
“Overturning Roe opens the door to restricting those rights,” she added.

The Twitter post follows another abortion-related statement by the vice president on Saturday regarding the Roe precedent.
“If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it will be an extreme step backward and a direct assault on the fundamental right to self-determination,” Harris wrote. “It represents a threat not just to women but to all Americans.”

On Friday, Harris also blasted a new law passed in Oklahoma that would ban most abortions from the moment of fertilization.
She called the law “outrageous,” arguing, “We must elect pro-choice leaders at the local, state, and federal level.”
Yesterday in Oklahoma, the state legislature passed a law that would effectively ban abortion from the moment of fertilization. It’s outrageous.
We must elect pro-choice leaders at the local, state, and federal level.

Harris previously released a statement regarding the recent Supreme Court leak that argued “opponents of Roe” wanted to take away the rights of women.
“The United States Supreme Court has now confirmed that the draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade is genuine,” Harris wrote.
“Roe ensures a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. It. Also, at its root, protects the fundamental right to privacy,” Harris continued. “What is clear is that the opponents of Roe want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies. Republican legislators in states across the country are weaponizing the use of the law against women.”
“The rights of all Americans are at risk. If the right to privacy is weakened, every person could face a future in which the government can potentially interfere in the personal decisions you make about your life. This is the time to fight for women and for our country with everything you have,” Harris concluded.
The leak of an early draft of a Supreme Court majority opinion that indicated Roe v. Wade would likely be struck down was first published by Politico on May 2.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the document, labeled as the “Opinion of the Court.” “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
The leaked draft also shows that Alito called Roe wrong from the start.
“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division,” Alito presented in the opinion draft.
