In yet another one of his far-left, stilted, free-of-all-nuance rants over the weekend, comedian John Oliver called upon white America to “march in the streets and demand a better country” while denouncing peaceful protests.
During Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver responded to the shooting of Daunte Wright, refusing to accept the premise that his death was an accident.
“I can safely say this week has been a fucking nightmare, from the news that [Wright] was pulled over for minor traffic violations, including having an air freshener hanging on his rearview mirror, to the 26-year veteran of the police force who killed him claiming it was somehow an accident, to the local police department flying a ‘thin blue line’ flag after the shooting, which is just corn-fed, deep-fried bullshit,” Oliver said.
Regarding President Joe Biden’s insistence on peaceful protests, Oliver said such statements are “so often just another way to prioritize compliance over righteous dissent and to protect property over human lives.”
Oliver then lamented how he has grown tired of rehashing the same information over and over again regarding police brutality and its role in perpetuating white supremacy.
“I could make the same arguments to you again now,” Oliver said. “I could describe the problem to you, but I think you know what and who it is. I could offer solutions, but I think you know what they are. I could offer you anger, but if you’re a sentient human being alive right now and you are not already full of that, I honestly don’t know what to say to you.:
“Because the fact is, Black people continue to be mowed down by the police that they pay for,” he concluded.
Later, Oliver called upon white America to actually bring about a fundamental change in policing.
“It’s once again been made painfully clear that we – and when I say we, I mean white America – have to stop talking about fundamental change in policing and actually make it happen because this cycle of state violence against Black lives has to be stopped,” he said. “So put on your shoes, leave the house, march in the streets, and demand a better country – one in which Black people are treated with fundamental respect.”
Oliver’s declaration followed fellow comedian Trevor Noah’s last week, who described America’s policing as a “rotten tree,” dismissing the idea that videos of cops killing black people represent just some bad apples.
“So my question is: where are the good apples?” he asked. “And honestly, I believe, we don’t see them not because there are no good people on the police force, I think there are many people who are good on the police force. That’s why they join. Because they want to do good. But I think it’s because they themselves know that if they do something, they’re going against the system. The system is more powerful than any individual.”
“The system in policing is doing exactly what it’s meant to do in America, and that is to keep poor people in their place. Who happens to be the most poor in America? Black people,” Noah said. “You monetize them, you imprison them, which monetizes them again — it’s a system. It’s not broken. It’s working the way it’s designed to work. And once you realize that, I feel like you get to a place where you go, ‘Oh, we’re not dealing with bad apples. We’re dealing with a rotten tree that happens to grow good apples.’ But for the most part, the tree that was planted is bearing the fruits that it was intended to.”
