Democrats are falling over themselves to tell the American people they want to raise their taxes.
The latest example comes from former Vice President Joe Biden, who said during a campaign stop in South Carolina that part of the way he would pay for all his policy proposals would be to “repeal those Trump tax cuts.”
Biden actually said this would be the “first thing” he’d do, to great applause from an audience that would see their taxes go up if the former vice president really were to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).
Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), a right-leaning advocacy group run by Grover Norquist, wrote that repealing the TCJA would “impose a large tax increase on the American people.”
“Thanks to the tax cuts, a typical family of four earning the median family income of $73,000 saw a tax cut of over $2,000 – a 58% reduction in federal taxes. A single parent with one child with annual income of $41,000 saw a tax cut of $1,304 – a 73% reduction in federal taxes,” ATR wrote.
ATR also pointed out that The New York Times admitted the TCJA resulted in a tax cut for “most people.”
“To a large degree, the gap between perception and reality on the tax cuts appears to flow from a sustained — and misleading — effort by liberal opponents of the law to brand it as a broad middle-class tax increase,” the Times wrote, without admitting to its own role in spreading the false propaganda.
ATR noted that when Walter Mondale promised to raise taxes on the American people if he were elected, he lost the election in a landslide, “winning only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia.”
Biden isn’t the only Democrat running for president saying they would raise taxes on the middle class. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said recently that she would repeal the TCJA for everyone and replace it with her own plan, which may or may not result in higher taxes on the middle class, depending on who you ask.
Ryan Ellis, a tax expert who used to work for ATR, told The Daily Wire that a family of four making $90,000 would see a $2,600 tax hike from repealing the TCJA, but only a $1,500 corresponding tax reduction from Harris’ plan.
Kyle Pomerleau, chief economist and a vice president of the Tax Foundation, told the Wire middle-class tax payers would see their after-tax income boosted more under Harris’ plan than the TCJA, but due to other incentives in Harris’ plan, economic output would be significantly reduced.
It’s incredible to watch Democrats run on raising your taxes. It’s even more incredible to listen to crowds cheer this. Do they not realize that means their taxes would go up?
Imagine hating President Donald Trump so much that you’re willing to give the government more of your money to get him out of office. And yet, whoever ends up with the Democrat nomination, even if they lose to Trump, will win more states than Mondale.
