On Thursday, the Department of Justice Inspector General report revealed that former FBI director James Comey, who had been tasked with investigating Hillary Clinton’s misuse of a private email server to store classified information, had used his own Gmail account to do FBI business.
According to the report, “We identified numerous instances in which Comey used a personal email account to conduct unclassified FBI business. We found that, given the absence of exigent circumstances and the frequency with which the use of personal email occurred, Comey’s use of a personal email account for unclassified FBI business to be inconsistent wth Department policy.”
The irony of Comey acquitting Hillary for use of her private server while himself using private email to pursue FBI business is obvious. But it’s also telling. Could it be that Comey added the “intent” provision of the law because he knew that he had engaged in similar activity, and didn’t want to get into hot water for doing so?
In any case, the IG report is a damning indictment of Comey across the board. We’ll have more as we peruse the entire report.
