Street Artists Invade La Brea Tar Pits to Portray GOP Establishment As Extinct Elephants

Los Angeles-based street artist Sabo has done it again. His latest subversive art installation involved infiltrating the La Brea Tar Pits on Sunday and transforming a set of mammoth statues into a subversive allegory about the “Establishment GOP.”

As the following images show, Sabo—a controversial artist whose edgy work has been described as both brilliant and “vandalism”—turned the park’s sculptures of three mammoths into a loaded dramatization of the “sinking” Republican establishment (the complete series of shots are available at Nerds for Cruz).

The large mammoth sinking in the tar pit is adorned with a giant “Jeb” name tag hanging from its trunk, while a baby mammoth, draped in a “Rubio 2016” banner, calls out helplessly from the bank. Overlooking the whole scene is another large and rather disinterested mammoth, which the banner tells us is the “Establishment GOP.”

“This bit of performance art represents the passing of the Old Republican Guard with it’s standard-bearer, Jeb, mired in the abyss.”

Sabo told The Daily Wire that the “germ of an idea” to use the tar pit as a site for his performance art had been in his mind “for over three years.”

“Had I been a Democrat it would have been easy calling Republicans old, extinct relics of the past,” Sabo told The Daily Wire in an email interview. “This bit of performance art represents the passing of the Old Republican Guard with it’s standard-bearer, Jeb, mired in the abyss. There is hope for them in the child ‘Rubio 2016’ crying out to Jeb from the shore but even he is a mastodon, the past, just waiting to find his place in the black pit.”

“I’d scouted the place out during the holidays and the park area was quite empty,” he explained. “I thought that was just the way it always was but when we showed up the place was humming with people. I wondered if I’d be able to pull this off. As soon as the crowd thinned out I decided it was ‘go time,’ but it didn’t take long for a crowd to gather back. Every single damn one of them had a camera pointed at us. Talk about stress.”

Truly an accurate depiction of the current state of the GOP.
