Should there ever be a President Donald J. Trump, we know where French President Francois Hollande would stand: against him.
In an opinion piece for Les Echos newspaper published Thursday, Hollande explained why America must elect Hillary Clinton and defeat Trump, whom he accused of being anti-immigrant, anti-Islam, and anti-elite, and whose “extreme right” positions, warned Hollande, would damage relations between the United States and Europe.
“The best thing the Democrats can do is to get Hillary Clinton elected,” wrote Hollande.
Despite being mired in a battle against radical Islam in large part because of his country’s reckless immigration policies, Hollande condemned Trump’s warnings about the threat posed by porous borders and the rise of Islamist terror. He also didn’t like his rhetoric about political “elites” too much, either.
“[Trump’s] slogans differ little from those of the extreme right in Europe and France: fear of the migratory wave, stigmatization of Islam, questioning of representative democracy, denouncing elites,” wrote Hollande.
Hollande and his fellow leftist leaders in Europe are feeling the heat as the rise in terrorist activity as well as crime surrounding immigrant and refugee populations has led to a massive pushback from their subjects. Right-wing and nationalist leaders, like Marine Le Pen in France, have seen a surge in popularity, while the Brexit has added even more fuel to the political panic of the “elites” Trump and his fellow “extrem[ists]” are so (effectively) denouncing.
