Last week, the Georgia State Legislature passed H.B. 481 — otherwise known as the “fetal heartbeat bill” — and Governor Brian Kemp has indicated that he has every intention to sign it into law. The bill would ban abortions as soon as a heartbeat is detected in the unborn baby, which could be as little as six weeks into pregnancy.
This is a welcome attempt to counter the radically “pro-choice” law passed in New York earlier this year, as well as the bill pushed by Virginia Democrats that would allow abortions up tountilbirth. Other states have also passed heartbeat bills in the last year, such as Ohio and Iowa.
