Dreamers Hold Candlelight Vigil Outside Jared & Ivanka’s Home To Save DACA

As the Trump administration’s promise to repeal President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program loomed on the horizon, Dreamers held a candlelight vigil outside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s D.C. home in hopes the couple’s presence might persuade President Trump to keep DACA going.

Forced onto the American populace by way of executive order in 2012, DACA would allow thousands of immigrants brought into the country illegally as minors to have deportations deferred and become eligible for a work permit. The recipients became known as the “Dreamers,” with the majority of them in high school or college.

Debating the morality of DACA and whether or not the Dreamers should be allowed citizenship does not change the fact that the Obama administration forced into law an immigration plan that Americans (including Congress) did not vote for. And while Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that DACA was on its way out, it looks like Americans will have to wait another six months to see if that promise materializes, if at all.

In the meantime, expect to see plenty more candlelight vigils held outside the home of Ivanka and Jared as Democrats plaster the airwaves with faces of tearful immigrants begging President Trump to keep DACA.

Trump’s withdrawal of DACA has incited division among the Republican ranks, with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) urging him not to pull the trigger, claiming that “this is something that Congress has to fix.”

As noted by Ben Shapiro, Congress will most likely do nothing on DACA, which will put President Trump in the position of putting pressure on legislators through mass deportations (which the media only craves) or risk not being able to follow through on his promise. Either way, it looks like DACA will (eventually) stand, making the candlelight vigils more of an act of political theater than anything of significance.
