‘Clueless’ Star Alicia Silverstone Says She ‘Wasn’t Prepared’ For Fame As A Teen

Actress Alicia Silverstone admitted she wasn’t anywhere near “prepared” for the complications that fame would bring after appearing in the hit 1995 movie “Clueless” as a teenager.

The 46-year-old actress, who recently reprised her role as Cher Horowitz from the coming-of-age film for a Super Bowl LVII commercial, said when she became a ’90s it-girl, she wasn’t ready to deal with stardom, the Hollywood Reporter reported.

“When Clueless came out, it really shifted,” Silverstone explained. “I had been the girl from ‘Crush,’ then I was the Aerosmith chick, and then, after that, I was Cher.”

“It was very complicated and I don’t think I knew how to manage it,” she added. “I didn’t have the foundation, the good tools to deal with it, I wasn’t prepared for it in any way, shape or form.”

“I really had no idea what was happening, and it didn’t feel comfortable,” the actress continued.

Following “Clueless,” Silverstone appeared in the unsuccessful 1997 “Batman and Robin” movie and again found disappointment in a crime comedy called “Excess Baggage.” The response to her appearance in both films led to a decline in her career. In recent years, she’s been making a comeback with roles in independent films like “The Lodge” in 2019, and “Perpetrator” and “Mustache,” both of which hit theaters this year.

“In terms of my work, I’m having nothing but fun now,” she told the outlet. “I had a ball in Amsterdam, making a film with these amazing interesting filmmakers. I’m really happy with my life. Just seeing Benicio Del Toro again on the set of ‘Reptiles.’ We haven’t worked together for 27 years. I thought: ‘it’s been an incredible journey.'”

During the Super Bowl broadcast earlier this month, Silverstone went viral for the ad showing her donning her Cher character’s yellow tartan skirt suit as she recited several well-known lines from the film.
