CNN’s Chris Cuomo has continued his attacks on President Trump by suggesting he has been “dog-whistling” to his supporters with strong talk about law and order during the protests over George Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
In a segment on Thursday, Cuomo suggested that Trump supporters want to see protesters, many of whom are black Americans, “put down.” Cuomo took issue with President Trump’s call to “dominate the streets” in response to the nationwide rioting and the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (The CHAZ) in Seattle.
“Wonder what effect that will have on people who say they are tired of being dominated,” Cuomo said, as reported by Newsbusters. “On the same day that the head of the Joint Chiefs apologized for even the suggestion of military presence in our politics, Trump, tone-deaf once again, doubled down.”
Cuomo then played a clip of President Trump in which he said of “dominating the street with compassion,” asserting that this a dog-whistle of some kind.
“‘Dominating the street with compassion.’ If that doesn’t tell you everything that Trump doesn’t know, I don’t know what will,” said Cuomo. “When I say he is tone-deaf, I mean the calls for equity and justice. That is because he is singing a different tune – it’s more like a dog whistle, right, to his base. And too many of them want to see the people who are begging for change put down.”
“The governor of Washington, however, is pushing back, saying his state won’t allow threats of military violence from the White House,” he continued. “The mayor of Seattle calls it a ‘threat to invade,’ and is calling on Trump to go back to his bunker. She is going to have more to say to us in just a moment.”
In an interview with Harris Faulkner of Fox News on Friday, President Trump said that he will “straighten out” Seattle if the state and local government to continue to allow The CHAZ remain uncontested.
“If there were more toughness, you wouldn’t have the kind of devastation that you had in Minneapolis and in Seattle,” Trump said. “I mean, let’s see what’s going on in Seattle, but I will tell you, if they don’t straighten that situation out, we’re going to straighten it out.”
“What I mean is very simple,” Trump continued. “We’re not going to let Seattle be occupied by anarchists … no, we’re not going to let this happen in Seattle. If we have to go in, we’re going to go in. The governor’s either going to do it — let the governor do it. He’s got great National Guard troops. So he can do it.”
“But one way or the other it’s going to get done,” Trump concluded. “These people are not going to occupy a major portion of a great city.”
