California City Officials Fight To Keep Chick-Fil-A From Doing Business

Another city has taken up the torch in the Left’s ongoing quest to hound fast-food giant Chick-fil-A.

“A San Mateo County official is pushing to stop a Chick-fil-A restaurant from opening up in Redwood City,” reports CBS Local news. “The McDonald’s restaurant on Whipple could soon be tuning into a Chick-fil-A, making it the chain’s 13th restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

San Mateo County supervisor David Canepa told reporters he is seeking to prevent the restaurant from obtaining an “architectural permit” due to its founder, Dan Cathy, previously expressing support for traditional marriage and for donating funds to pro-marriage groups.

“This would not go before the city council — because it’s an existing use, it would just be administerial for the planning commission,” Canepa said. “When people think of the Chick-fil-A logo — what they think of is anti-LGBTQ.”

Canepa hopes the community pressure will be strong enough to persuade Chick-fil-A away from doing business. “What we are trying to do is to make sure Chick-fil-A — if they want to do business here — that there is a lot of pressure here and that they should do the right thing and withdraw their application,” he said.

Craig Wiesner of the San Mateo County LGBTQ Commission supports Canepa in his quest to stop Chick-fil-A from opening in the city. Ironically, he told reporters in the very same sentence that city government should not prevent companies from conducting business while simultaneously calling on the community to prevent Chick-fil-A from conducting business.

“I don’t think that we should necessarily be regulating what businesses can open in Redwood City, but I do think that as a community, we can stand up and say we don’t want this particular business which has taken a very open stand against LGBTQ people and spent millions of dollars against us at the heart of our county,” Wiesner told reporters.

The CBS report noted that Chick-fil-A’s in the Bay Area have faced scores of protests in recent years. Advocates have even suggested that a future restaurant outside Mineta San Jose International Airport should be forced to hang rainbow flags in solidarity with LGBTQ pride.

A Chick-fil-A spokesman told the outlet in a statement: “We are committed to earning the respect and business of all our customers, and one day hope to serve guests in Redwood City.”

The hate toward the chicken sandwich empire began in 2012 when company founder Dan Cathy expressed support for traditional one-man/one-woman marriage, prompting boycotts across the country from LGBTQ activists.

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,'” Cathy said at the time. “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

Discrimination against Chick-fil-A has reached unprecedented levels in recent months, with universities and airports seeking to ban the fast-food chain from doing business due to the founder’s biblical worldview on human sexuality. In 2019 alone, the chain has been banned from two major airports — San Antonio and Buffalo — and several universities. Most recently, a dean at Rider University resigned from his post when the school banned the fast food restaurant on campus.

To prevent further discrimination, the Texas House recently passed a “Save Chick-fil-A” bill to prevent the San Antonio Airport and other venues in the state from banning the restaurant. As noted by The Daily Wire, however, the chicken giant just continues to thrive, becoming the third biggest fast-food chain in the United States with $10.2 billion in sales.
