Former First Lady Michelle Obama has made her feelings about President Donald Trump clear: she’s, um, not a fan. But after taking a predictable swipe at the president on Tuesday during an appearance on NBC’s “Tonight Show,” Obama took a jab at First Lady Melania Trump, too.
When “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon asked Mrs. Obama to describe how she felt leaving the White House to a freshly sworn-in President Trump on Inauguration Day, the former First Lady reacted, “Bye, Felicia!” The trendy expression is a reference to the 90’s film “Friday” and is basically used as a rude dismissal of an idea, or as in this case, a person.
Unsurprisingly, the New York City audience ate up the quip from Obama, erupting into laughter. Pleased with herself, Mrs. Obama laughed along, too.
Fallon followed up, “Is that what was going through your mind?”
“A lot was going on that day,” said a seemingly aggrieved Obama. “That was a day.”
And her insults toward the Trumps weren’t over, yet. Obama took a jab at Mrs. Trump, mocking her successor for giving her a gift from Tiffany’s on Inauguration Day. (How dare she!)
“Then the Tiffany’s box,” she complained.
Mrs. Trump handed Mrs. Obama a blue Tiffany’s gift box outside the White House; a moment that went viral on the Internet, mostly due to Mrs. Obama’s look of confusion upon acceptance. As Obama would later publicly reveal on The Ellen Show, receiving such a gift at that time was not “protocol.”
“It’s just all, you know, a lot,” Obama told Fallon.
In November, Obama complained that Trump hasn’t reached out to her for advice, even though she told her she’s a phone call away, reported The Daily Wire.
Stephanie Grisham, Mrs. Trump’s spokeswoman, hit back: “Mrs. Trump is a strong and independent woman who has been navigating her role as First Lady in her own way. When she needs advice on any issue, she seeks it from her professional team within the White House.”
Obama also gave the president a good beating in her new memoir, “Becoming.”
“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed,” writes Obama in the memoir, according to The Hill. “But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks. What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
President Trump responded in kind, telling reporters, “I’ll never forgive [Barack Obama] for what he did to our United States military. By not funding it properly, it was depleted. What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you.”
