According to initial reports, federal investigators have executed a search warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan apartment and office.

“Prosecutors obtained the search warrants as part of an investigation into whether Mr. Giuliani broke lobbying laws as President Trump’s personal lawyer,” reported The New York Times.

The search warrants were reportedly executed early on Wednesday morning at the home and office of the former New York City mayor. According to “three people with knowledge of the investigation,” the move by federal investigators represents a significant ramp-up in “a criminal investigation into Mr. Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine.”

The Washington Post noted that “The investigation into Giuliani revolves around his interactions with Ukrainian figures ahead of last year’s presidential election, as he sought information that might prove politically damaging to then-candidate Joe Biden and pressed for the ouster of the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.” CNN added that “He hasn’t been charged and has denied wrongdoing.”

“The investigators seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices and searched his apartment on Madison Avenue and his office on Park Avenue at about 6 a.m., two of the people said,” The New York Times reported, adding that “The execution of search warrants is an extraordinary action for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president.”

Robert J. Costello, Giuliani’s lawyer, described the actions as “legal thuggery,” adding that the searches were “unnecessary because his client had offered to answer prosecutors’ questions, except those regarding Mr. Giuliani’s privileged communications with the former president,” according to the Times.

“What they did today was legal thuggery,” Costello said. “Why would you do this to anyone, let alone someone who was the associate attorney general, United States attorney, the mayor of New York City, and the personal lawyer to the 45th president of the United States.”

According to The Washington Examiner, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, as well as the FBI, have “long sought to obtain a search warrant for Giuliani’s cellular devices.” The outlet added that “Senior political appointees in the Justice Department under Trump repeatedly sought to block a search warrant on the former mayor.”

Since Joe Biden entered office, Rudy Giuliani has been the focus of several sources of criticism. In March, The Daily Wire reported that “Former President Donald Trump and his longtime lawyer Rudy Giuliani have been served in a civil rights lawsuit that claims Trump conspired with Giuliani and far-right extremist groups in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.”

Just days after Biden’s Inauguration, the former New York City mayor was sued by Dominion Voting Systems for a reported $1.3 billion. The Daily Wire reported at the time, “Dominion filed a 107-page lawsuit in the Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., … accusing Giuliani, who serves as former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, of making ‘demonstrably false’ claims on Twitter and elsewhere.”
