If you are a Republican and a major natural disaster happened on your watch — and you are apparently not within earshot of the disaster— then the media say you don’t have empathy and you are a terrible person. This was true of George W. Bush when it came to Hurricane Katrina. It was true of Ted Cruz when it came to freezing temperatures in Texas.
But it is not true if you are a Democrat. If you are a Democrat, you can do whatever the hell you want. So Joe Biden went on vacation to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He was asked specifically about the death toll in Lahaina on the island of Maui and he said, “No comment.” Then he rode around on his bike, had some ice cream, and sat on the beach for a week. Then he went to Lake Tahoe in Nevada, and he sat there at the mansion of a major donor.
