NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - AUGUST 04: Democratic presidential candidate, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) speaks during a town hall on jobs and economic security at Cheyenne High School on August 4, 2019 in North Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to his planned remarks on economic matters, Sanders also talked about gun issues in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio that left at least 29 dead.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has been hospitalized in Nevada after suffering from “chest discomfort” and his campaign has canceled the senator’s events and appearances “until further notice,” according to a statement released by Sanders campaign advisor Jeff Weaver.

“During a campaign event yesterday evening, Sen. Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted,” said Weaver, reports ABC news. “Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days.”

The Associated Press explains the procedure below:

In Sanders’ case, when doctors insert a stent, they first thread a tiny balloon inside a blocked artery to widen it. The stent is a small wire mesh tube that then is propped inside to keep the artery open. The number of stents needed depends on the size of the clog.

The treatment can immediately improve symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath. The stents are threaded into place through blood vessels in the groin or wrist, requiring only a tiny incision. Most are coated with medication to prevent the targeted artery from reclosing. That is still a risk, requiring monitoring, and patients also often are prescribed blood thinners to prevent clots from forming in the stents.

An aide for the campaign told The New York Times on Wednesday that Sanders “feels better than ever because that’s how people feel after they get a stent and there’s more blood flow.”

On Tuesday, the Sanders campaign announced that it raised over $25 million — the largest third-quarter fundraising haul announced thus far among the Democratic Party presidential primary candidates, according to the Times. Following the announcement, the Sanders campaign announced they planned on purchasing $1.3 million of TV ads that would broadcast across Iowa over a two-week period.

However, following Sanders’ hospitalization and surgery, the campaign has cancelled the entire Iowa TV ad order, according to Politico. A campaign spokesman told Politico that the cancellation is “just a postponement.” The TV ads were originally supposed to begin airing on Thursday, reports the news agency.

The subject of candidates’ age and health has frequently come up over the course of the Democratic primary cycle. Sanders, who is 78 and the oldest Democratic candidate, has dismissed these criticisms, telling late-night host Stephen Colbert just last week that he was “in good health and running a vigorous campaign,” according to Vox.

Sanders was recently given a “clean bill of health” following an incident in which he cut his head on a glass shower door while on the campaign trail, according to the Associated Press. Although Sanders required seven stitches, the incident was small enough that Sanders proceeded with his campaign events as scheduled.

Sanders is currently running in his second bid for the presidency. He previously came in second during the Democratic primary of 2016, losing the nomination to former U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
