Are Female Inmates In California Being Treated As Second-Class Citizens?

SANTA BARBARA, CA - JUNE 12: The Santa Barbara County Detention and Correctional Facility, one of two jails where singer Michael Jackson could be sent if the deliberating jury declares him guilty in his child molestation trial, is seen on June 12, 2005 in Santa Barbara, California. Jackson is charged in a 10-count indictment with molesting a boy, plying him with liquor and conspiring to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion.

This year, woke Leftists in California passed legislation that would allow the Department of Corrections to house transgender inmates in dormitories based on their preferred sex. This means that biological males could be housed in women’s facilities and vice versa.

The move has resulted in more than 250 transfer requests since the law went into effect on Jan. 1, with the DOC now overwhelmed by the sheer number of resulting transfers. COVID-19 and the lack of bed availability has now further compounded the issue. Social distancing and a lack of adequate bed space have been such a problem with prisons and jails throughout the pandemic that the Golden State released thousands of inmates, including numerous sex offenders.

Now that a number of prisons have released inmates, transfers — including gender-based ones — are taking place again, albeit slower than they were pre-COVID. As a result, female inmates have become rightfully concerned for their safety, especially after correctional officers warned about the potential for sexual harassment and assault as biological men move into the facility.

“That if we think it’s bad now, be prepared for the worst. That it’s going to be off the hook, it’s going to be jumping,” Tomiekia Johnson said of her conversation with staffers, according to The Los Angeles Times. “They say we’re going to need a facility that’s going to be like a maternity ward. They say we’re going to have an inmate program where inmates become nannies.”

The number of inmates that identify as “nonbinary, intersex, or transgender” make up a small portion — 1,129 inmates or 1% — of the state’s total prison population. Despite that, the Department of Corrections is going to great lengths to accommodate the transgender population.

Given that no requests have been denied, according to reports, inmates have no disincentive when it comes to simply identifying as transgender and having their transfer requests approved. Because of that, inmates are taking advantage of the situation, which have resulted in “fake claims about their gender identity,” the Times reported.

Because “gender identity” is “self-reported,” prison officials have no way of knowing whether or not a person is actually transgender. They have to take the word of someone who, by definition, is less likely to be trustworthy. As a result, female inmates are being forced to deal with having biological males living among them, something that puts their safety in jeopardy.

This is another sign of the times. Elected officials are more concerned about the well-being of a few than the well-being of the population as a whole. We have seen it with transgender athletes partaking in women’s sports. We have seen it with taxpayers in California footing the bill when it comes to gender reassignment surgeries. And now we are seeing it with “gender identity” dormitories in prisons.

Why is it that biological females are always put on the back burner and told to suck it up, all in the name of “inclusion” and “diversity?”
