When you think of the deadliest cities in America, you probably think of Detroit, Baltimore, maybe some place in New York and California.

It’s true that Detroit, Michigan and Baltimore, Maryland rank among America’s top five deadliest cities, but the other three on the list might surprise you. Fox News reported on the most recent crime statistics from the FBI, which showed an estimated 16,214 murders in the U.S. in 2018 (2019 data is not available yet). Below are the top 5 deadliest cities in America:

5. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The state capital of Louisiana “saw 35.1 homicide deaths per 100,000 residents in 2018, which is 10 places higher than Chicago’s murder rate. In total, 87 people were murdered in Baton Rouge in 2018,” Fox reported, adding that the number of murders in the city actually fell from 2017, which saw 106 murders.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

Louisiana makes the list again. New Orleans in 2018 had a murder rate of 37.1 per 100,000, with 146 murders taking place in the city. NOLA.com, however, reported that this was actually the “lowest annual murder toll since 1971, when there were 116 slayings.” The outlet reported that 2018 also marked the second year in a row the number of murders dropped. In 2016, the city suffered 174 murders, but that number dropped to 157 in 2017.

3. Detroit, Michigan

It’s no surprise that Detroit is on the list, and it’s not just murders that make it one of America’s most dangerous cities. The 2018 murder rate in Detroit was 38.9 per 100,000 people, but murders dropped slightly to 261, down from 267 in 2017, Fox reported.

The Detroit News reported that overall violent crime rate in the city decreased by 2% in 2018, though it still placed among the most dangerous cities with a rate of 2,008 violent crimes per 100,000. Violent crime includes murder, rape, assault, and robbery. There were a total of 13,478 violent crimes reported in Detroit in 2018.

2. Baltimore, Maryland

“Baltimore saw 51 homicides per 100,000 people in 2018, more than five times the national average, for a grand total of 309 homicide victims. For perspective that’s 20 more than were murdered in New York City the same year, despite having less than 10 percent of New York City’s population. Though Baltimore’s murder rate remained high, its overall crime rate dropped by nearly 60% between the mid 1990s and the mid 2010s,” Fox reported.

1. St. Louis, Missouri

Another city in a southern state makes the list. The murder rate in St. Louis was 60.9 per 100,000 in 2018, Fox reported. The city’s population is just 318,000, yet saw 186 murders that year.

The FBI statistics note that an estimated 1,206,836 violent crimes were reported in 2018, but noted this was a slight drop from the 2017 estimates and that robbery offenses fell by 12%, murder fell by 6.2%, and aggravated assault decreased by 0.4%. Rape reports, using a revised definition that allows more woman to make accusations, increased by 2.7%.
