According to RealClearPolitics, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is the present polling front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, leads President Donald Trump in national head-to-head polling matchups by an average of 8.1%. But in what can only be deemed an alarming poll for the president’s re-election chances, a new Quinnipiac University poll even shows Biden leading a head-to-head matchup against Trump in the bright red state of Texas. According to Quinnipiac, Biden is the only Democratic presidential candidate who would currently defeat Trump in the Lone Star State — although many other hypothetical matchups polled within the margin of error.
Per Politico:
The Quinnipiac University poll shows that Joe Biden would top Trump by four points — 48 percent to 44 percent — in a general election matchup there, an outcome the ruby red state hasn’t seen in four decades.
But even while Biden is the only Democratic presidential candidate to beat Trump in a head-to-head matchup in Texas, the poll signals trouble for the president there in that it found five other candidates within the poll’s margin of error, including home-state politicians Beto O’Rourke and Julián Castro.
Fascinatingly, as Politico also notes, “the next strongest candidate in the state [after Biden] was Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who the poll found losing to the president by only 1 point, 46 percent to 45 percent.”
National Democrats invested a lot of money in Texas during the last election cycle in an attempt to boost former congressman Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-TX) bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz was ultimately successfully re-elected, but by a statewide margin that was far too close for comfort for many conservatives. Down-ballot Republicans in Texas also suffered great political carnage as a result of the combination of national Democratic money that flooded into the state and the option of mass, readily available straight-ticket voting.
Conservatives frequently fret about the political future of Texas. After all, it is difficult to envision a Republican Party majority in the Electoral College absent Texas, assuming anything short of a fundamental partisan realignment between the two major parties.
As The Daily Wire reported in March, Reuters admitted that it intentionally refused to go public with a story, during the heat of the Cruz/O’Rourke race, that O’Rourke belonged to a grotesque online hacker group:
Reuters reported late on Friday night that their reporter who broke the story about Democrat Beto O’Rourke belonging to a hacker group had the story for two years and agreed to sit on it until after O’Rourke’s Senate race against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
The report, published early on Friday, documented O’Rourke’s involvement in a hacker group named “Cult of the Dead Cow,” and included multiple past writings from O’Rourke, some of which were described as “disturbing.”
“After more than a year of reporting, [Joseph] Menn persuaded O’Rourke to talk on the record,” Reuters reported. “In an interview in late 2017, O’Rourke acknowledged that he was a member of the group, on the understanding that the information would not be made public until after his Senate race against Ted Cruz in November 2018.”
