On Sunday, President Donald Trump fired back after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused him of racism for criticizing the dilapidated condition of Rep. Elijah Cummings’ (D-MD) Baltimore congressional district.
"Someone please explain to Nancy Pelosi, who was recently called a racist by those in her own party, that there is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore," Trump wrote in a series of early morning tweets.
"Just take a look, the facts speak louder than words! The Democrats always play the Race Card, when in fact, they have done so little for our Nation’s great African American people," he continued. "Now, lowest unemployment in U.S. history, and only getting better. Elijah Cummings has failed badly!"
The president seemingly took umbrage with Cummings’ treatment of acting Homeland Security Sec. Kevin McAleenan during a House Oversight Committee hearing earlier in July. During a heated exchange, Cummings, who chairs the committee, shouted at McAleenan, accusing him and his department of having an "empathy deficit" for their treatment of immigrants who are detained for illegally entering the United States.
"Rep. Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men [and] women of Border Patrol, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous," Trump tweeted on Saturday. "His district is considered the Worst in the USA as proven last week doing a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient [and] well run, just very crowded."
"Cumming[s] District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess," he continued. "If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous [and] filthy place."
"Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States," Trump added. "No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!"
Pelosi promptly came to the defense of the 13-term congressman. While she refrained from addressing Baltimore’s deteriorating conditions, she was quick to attribute racial motivations to Trump’s criticism.
"[Cummings] is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague," Pelosi responded over Twitter. "We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership. #ElijahCummingsIsAPatriot"
Interestingly, the city of Baltimore has been a top contender for the most rat-infested cities in the United States. The list, which is compiled annually by pest control company Orkin, placed Baltimore in the top 10 "Rattiest Cities" for the second year in a row in 2018.
Baltimore also had the worst homicide rate among the 50 largest cities in the country, as well as the second-highest violent crime rate overall, according to FBI data released in 2018. At the time, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan called the news "shocking and disappointing," but further noted that "it doesn’t come as a complete surprise."
"Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco," Trump said on Sunday. "It is not even recognizable lately. Something must be done before it is too late. The Dems should stop wasting time on the Witch Hunt Hoax and start focusing on our Country!"
