House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday urged House Democrats to back a new resolution to condemn President Trump after the president tweeted over the weekend that "progressive Democratic congresswomen" should "go back" to their home countries.
"The House cannot allow the President’s characterization of immigrants to our country to stand. Our Republican colleagues must join us in condemning the President’s xenophobic tweets," Pelosi wrote in a letter to House Democrats. She said there is a "forthcoming" resolution from five Democratic members who were born in other countries.
"This weekend, the president went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about members of Congress," Pelosi continued. "Rather than attack members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values."
On Saturday, Trump ripped members of the new progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
"So interesting to see 'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly ... and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run," Trump wrote on Twitter.
"Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how ... it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!" the president wrote.
Trump never mentioned Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ("AOC") of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan or Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, but it was fairly clear who he was targeting.
AOC responded, writing on Twitter: "You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder. You won’t accept a nation that sees healthcare as a right or education as a #1 priority, especially where we’re the ones fighting for it."
Pressley also fired back: "THIS is what racism looks like. WE are what democracy looks like. And we’re not going anywhere. Except back to DC to fight for the families you marginalize and vilify everyday." Tlaib said, "My biggest fear is that he is intentionally distracting us from the fact that ICE is knocking on doors without warrants right now." And Omar said of Trump: "You are stoking white nationalism bc you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda."
Trump shot back and doubled down.
"So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, 'RACIST.' Their disgusting language ... and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged. If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!" he wrote on Sunday.
On Monday, he went further.
"When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!" he wrote.
"If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.," Trump added.
