Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took her extreme left-wing agenda to new levels during an interview with The New Yorker Radio this week, saying that the entire Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should be eliminated.
Ocasio-Cortez made the comment while discussing her past calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with David Remnick.
"ICE is not under DOJ, it's under the Department of Homeland Security and so we have now —" Ocasio-Cortez said.
"Would you get rid of Homeland Security too?" Remnick asked.
"I think so," Ocasio-Cortez responded. "I think so."
Ocasio-Cortez called the creation of DHS an "egregious mistake" by the Bush administration.
DHS was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans, and is designed to help prevent attacks and deal with threats against the United States.
Ocasio-Cortez is not the only member of the far-left wing of the Democratic Party that wants to destroy DHS.
In February, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) also made a similar call when she tweeted "#Not1Dollar for DHS."
Omar tweeted: "When Democrats stood our ground last month, we proved that Individual 1 does not have the public support to ram his hateful wall through Congress. Let’s stand firm: #Not1Dollar for DHS."
"DHS has a budget of over $45 billion per year, which it uses to fund multiple operational and support components that the department oversees," The Daily Wire reported. DHS also employs nearly a quarter of a million people, according to its website.
Eliminating DHS would bring an end to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), United States Secret Service (USSS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Management Directorate, Science and Technology Directorate, Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, and the Office of Operations Coordination.
DHS has five core goals, which include preventing terrorism and enhancing security, securing and managing the borders, enforcing and administering immigration laws, safeguarding and securing cyberspace, and ensuring resilience to disasters.
