Speaking while he had lunch with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday, former Vice President Joe Biden spoke of the shooting in Colorado in which one young student saved others by attacking the gunman, sacrificing his own life in the process. Biden claimed it was “outrageous that we still only talk about offering prayers” while ignoring the possibility of having armed security in schools, bloviating, “The idea that we have to rely on a young man throwing his body in front of someone who’s firing on our children? It’s just bizarre.” Biden also stated that Americans have an obligation to see that illegal immigrants should have health care.
Biden, after calling the student a hero, said, “It’s outrageous that we still only talk about offering prayers. Look, I don’t know enough detail to know, maybe you guys do, about whether or not, what kind of weapon was used, what the background checks were of the detail. But the idea the we don’t have universal background checks, the idea that we don’t outlaw a number of the weapons that I was able to get outlawed in the crime bill, from large magazines and assault weapons, this is crazy. By the way, it has no — it doesn’t impact on the First —the Second Amendment at all."
He added, "Look, if you left your car out there with the keys in it, and some kid took it? You’re gonna be sued for that and responsible. Why in God’s name — I don’t know where the gun came from, but if the gun came from somebody who didn’t have a trigger lock on it and the person doesn’t own it, they should be held responsible. It’s a requirement for public safety; it’s necessary … the idea that we have to rely on a young man throwing his body in front of someone who’s firing on our children? It’s just bizarre."
Asked if he thought that illegal immigrants in the U.S. and are “law-abiding” should be entitled to federal benefits like Medicare and Medicaid and given health care, Biden responded, “I think that anyone who is in a situation where they’re in need of health care, regardless of whether they’re documented or undocumented, we have an obligation to see that they’re cared for. That’s why I think we need more clinics around the country. And this idea that undocumented — and by the way, a significant portion of undocumented folks in this country are there because they’ve overstayed their visas.”
He continued, “The biggest thing we gotta do is just to tone down the rhetoric. We know why it’s happening; it’s just great fear and concern. ‘Why are your jobs in such tough shape?’ Because of that — and he describes in very graphic and unflattering terms, that other, that immigrant. This is ridiculous.”
Biden stated, “This is a crisis created by Trump, this is a crisis created by the administration, and that’s why you know he keeps these hordes coming.”
