Late-night host Stephen Colbert jabbed former Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday night for botching an opportunity to best President Trump's MAGA campaign slogan.
Appearing on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, anchor Robin Roberts asked Biden how he plans to compete with President Trump's iconic "Make America Great Again" slogan that catapulted him to success in 2016. "The president has a motto: 'Make America Great Again.' Do you have one?" Robin Roberts asked Biden.
The vice president did not exactly give a catchy answer and threw out a litany of potential campaign slogans that would not really work as an acronym like MAGA. "Make America Moral Again," he told Robin Roberts. "Make America return to the essence of who we are, the dignity of the country, the dignity of people and treating our people with dignity and this God-awful deliberate division that’s being taken in order to separate people to aggrandize his own power."
After playing a clip of Biden's jumbled reply, Colbert quipped, "Move over, MAGA," and then attempted to create an acronym out of his answer.
"MAGA's over because Biden's coming at you with: MAMAMARTTEOWWATDOTC..." Colbert continued, in a moment noted by Fox News. "A little awkward to say, I'll admit, but it's going to look fantastic on his hat."
A photo of Biden immediately cut onto the screen revealing him wearing a tall, coneheads-style red hat with his impossible-to-pronounce slogan emblazoned across it.
LifeNews argues that had Biden stuck with a catchier slogan like "Make America Moral Again" (MAMA), it would have been problematic in light of his stance on abortion:
Biden strongly supports abortion and backs abortions up to birth. There’s no way he can make the country moral by supporting the destruction of 1 million unborn children each and every year.
Biden has a strong pro-abortion voting record that goes back for many years, and he supported President Barack Obama’s leadership as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history. What’s more, pro-abortion movement leaders say they “trust” Biden to protect abortion on demand. As the vice president, he supported the administration’s pro-abortion policies, including Obamacare, which forced religious employers to pay for drugs that may cause abortions.
From 2001 to 2008, Biden’s voting record on pro-life issues was close to zero, according to the National Right to Life Committee. In 2005, for example, he voted against the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits funding to overseas groups that promote and/or perform abortions. He also voted repeatedly to require that military service members’ abortions be covered by taxpayer dollars.
Colbert mocking Biden illustrates the uphill climb that the former vice president will have to face as he goes further into the 2020 campaign. His only claim to the nomination is name recognition, which has already dwindled due to his past record that progressives have already begun to pick apart. As Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro puts it, his whole campaign may be one giant apology tour.
