President Trump made sure to highlight a rare appearance on Fox News Tuesday by Rush Limbaugh that featured the conservative talk show host's blistering takes on Trump's potential 2020 opponents and the continued failure of the Democratic Party and the media to figure out how to handle Trump. Limbaugh also offered his thoughts on the final report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which he slammed as part of "an attempt to overthrow the 2016 elections."
Tuesday night, Trump tweeted out clips of Limbaugh's interview with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, along with a simple, "Thanks Rush!"
In the interview with MacCallum (full video below), Limbaugh addressed a range of politically charged topics, including the sharp-left turn the Democratic Party has recently taken and which of the presidential contenders, if any, really have a shot at taking out Trump.
"I want to start with Joe Biden," said MacCallum (transcript via RushLimbaugh.com). "You’ve seen him run for president twice before, in 1984 and 1988. What version of Joe Biden do you think we’re gonna get this time, and how do you think he’ll do?"
Limbaugh responded by reiterating an argument he's made repeatedly over the last three years: The Democrats and their allies in the media simply "do not understand" Donald Trump.
"As I sit here tonight in my palatial EIB Southern Command studio, I remain stunned and amazed that the Democrat Party and the media still do not understand who Donald Trump is," said Limbaugh. "They don’t understand how he won. They don’t understand how he’s gonna win again in 2020. They don’t understand the people who voted for him or why. They hold all of that in contempt."
Limbaugh then got to MacCallum's question: "Here’s the thing: Joe Biden is probably the best chance they’ve got, and he doesn’t have a chance," Rush said, adding mockingly, "I mean, Joe Biden and Crazy Bernie and Mayor Pete?"
That prompted some laughter from MacCallum. Rush continued: "I mean, you’ve got three white guys, two of them are brontosauruses from Jurassic Park, and that isn’t gonna sit well with the rest of this party which has gone so far left."
Noting the Democratic candidates' plans to offer "a lot of free stuff" in their various proposals and Trump's sub-40% approval numbers, MacCallum asked, "So is he vulnerable to all of these promises from all of these Democrats?"
"No," Limbaugh asserted, dismissing the significance of polls, particularly at this stage in the campaign process.
"These Democrats are all in the process of trying to out-leftist or out-liberal each other, and they’re in a contest of who can give away the most," he said. "But with Elizabeth Warren, forgiving college loans — forgiving that debt — and then promising free college and Medicare for all and a Green New Deal? Why is anybody gonna need to go to college Because nobody’s gonna need a job, because the Democrats are gonna be giving everybody a universal basic income."
"So why does any of this matter?" he asked. "None of this is real. None of this can happen. This is disinformation..." All the promises of handouts, he suggested, "just shows how little they think of their own voters."
"What a way to ruin a life," he lamented. "Nobody would raise kids this way."
Limbaugh also addressed the much-anticipated Mueller report and summed up its findings: "there was never any evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia."
"The collusion, as I said, was Hillary, the DNC, and the Russians via Steele," said Rush. The Mueller investigation was effectively "opposition research."
"This was not even an investigation of Trump," said the radio host. "What it was an attempt to overthrow the 2016 elections. And the Mueller investigation, I believe, was actually many things, including a cover-up and a distraction to keep people from understanding what really happened. Donald Trump accomplished one of the greatest achievements of his life against all odds, with no assistance."
