Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) spread multiple lies about the Trump administration on Monday in a multi-tweet attack she launched against the Department of Homeland Security.
"Kirstjen Nielsen was responsible for: -Locking toddlers in cages -The death of a 7 year-old on her agency’s watch -Repeatedly lying about taking children from their mothers Now this President wants someone even 'tougher,'" Omar tweeted. "This should be a warning to all who believe in justice."
"The acting DHS Secretary commanded the CBP officers who physically separated over 2,800 children from their parents. He was in charge when CBP fired tear gas on a crowd of migrants seeking asylum He failed to disclose details about the death of a child in CBP custody to Congress," Omar continued.
"Meanwhile, the President is calling asylum seekers 'animals' and saying our country is 'full,'" Omar concluded. "This is dehumanization, plain and simple. We cannot continue to ignore the echoes of some of the most violent moments in history."
Nearly all of the eight claims that Omar made were completely false or were highly misleading.
Omar's claim that Nielsen locked toddlers in cages was completely false. As many online noted, the incident that Omar was referring to had nothing to do with any department at Homeland Security.
Omar's claim comes from an image of a toddler in a cage that went viral when people claimed that it showed the toddler in DHS custody, when, in fact, the photo was taken at a protest staged in front of Dallas City Hall.
Omar's claim that Neilsen was responsible for the death of 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin, who died from sepsis, is completely false.
"Guatemalan Consul Tekandi Paniagua tells CNN’s @edlavaCNN he met extensively with the father of 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin Friday night in El Paso. Paniagua says the father of Jakelin has 'no complaints about how Border Patrol agents treated him and his daughter,'" CNN's Jake Tapper reported. "The consul says the father told him that agents did everything they possibly could to help the girl on the bus."
"The father, per the consul, confirmed the DHS timeline that Jakelin did not show any signs of distress until about 5am when they were placed on the bus to ride from the border checkpoint to the border patrol station 95 miles away," Tapper added.
Omar's claim that CBP fired "tear gas on a crowd of migrants seeking asylum" is very misleading. The reality is tear gas was fired at a large group of migrants who were attempting to illegally enter the United States while throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents.
Omar's claim that acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan did not disclose the death of a child in CBP custody is misleading.
Omar spread the lie that Trump called asylum seekers "animals," which has been repeatedly debunked over the last year. Trump's claim that "our country is full," is mostly accurate, especially considering the DHS has been overwhelmed by the number of illegal aliens in its custody for weeks. Even former Obama officials have said that there is a full-blown crisis on the southern border and the system is being completely overwhelmed.
Omar accusing Trump of "dehumanization" comes after she said that Trump was not human last month.
